In June, I wrote a blog post to celebrate The Clever Quill's 1 year anniversary of business, entitled Truths About Owning a Business That No One Tells You. It highlights the less glamorous sides of being an online entrepreneur, and cuts straight to the reality of things.
But, the weather outside is cold, bleak and dreary because it's March and I live in Canada. So, let's take a look at some of the lighter, happier realities of being a business owner, and thus being your own boss. Because when you get to call the shots, all the little perks really do matter.
The job market is total crap, so why not make your own work?
Especially for us millennials… man this job market is brutal. It seems like every entry-level job out there needs “at least 5 years experience”. What about those of us who are trying to get in there!? Plus, let’s be real… job security doesn’t even exist anymore. Why not call the shots yourself, and make your own work, that you actually want to do?
You can work from home in your yoga pants.
Or harem pants. Or leggings. Or sweats. Yes, it is as great as it sounds. Especially on those days when you feel like shit… it’s one of the things that encourages you to get out of bed and get to it! You’re more productive, happier, and just… killing it. All while curled up on the couch in your living room.
And for the incredible parents who run their gigs from home while also raising their kids... I tip my hat off to you. You're absolute, undeniable superstars!
So long, morning commute!
All those people waking up at the crack of dawn to throw on their faces, pour a travel mug of coffee, hop in their car, and… sit in traffic for at least an hour… The worst, right? Well… what if you could avoid that? Period? YOU CAN!
Here’s a snapshot of my mornings… My alarm goes off at 7AM. I lie in bed until 7:20AM. I crawl out of bed, throw on my clothes, brush my teeth, and am seated in front of my laptop, cup of tea in hand, ready to take the world by storm at 8:30AM. #boss
You’ve worked your ass off for every cent… and that makes it feel SO much better.
Do you EVER learn the value of money once you’re responsible for bringing in every single dollar. If you aren’t clocking hours, you’re not making money. Hell, even if you’re clocking hours, at times you aren’t making money (hello administration??). That said… no need to ask your boss for a raise. All of that is up to you! Want to make more each month? Take on more clients. Start outsourcing. Hire an employee. The power is all in your hands. And it feels pretty damn rewarding.
If it sounds like a dream… it is. And it’s totally worth it. Sacrifices aside. Late nights aside. Working weekends (like me in this moment) aside… It’s worth it. If you’re brave enough to take the risk, you’ll be opening yourself up to a world of possibility.
